Can I Get Microneedling if I Have a Sunburn?

Microneedling has gained popularity in recent years as a noninvasive cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of your skin. It involves using tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on your skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin rejuvenation.
This noninvasive procedure can treat a variety of skin issues, including enlarged pores, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, loose and sagging skin, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.
At Nutura Clinic in Portland, Oregon, naturopathic physician Andrew von Plitt, ND, has extensive experience performing microneedling. He uses serums and Chinese medicine herbs in conjunction with microneedling treatments to maximize the effectiveness of the procedure.
However, now that it’s summertime and you’re most likely enjoying the sun, you may wonder if you can still schedule a microneedling appointment with a suntan or sunburn. Here, Dr. von Plitt shares information on what you should do and what you should avoid before and after your microneedling treatment.
Microneedling and sunburned skin
A sunburn causes significant damage to your skin, resulting in redness, pain, and inflammation. A microneedling treatment involves puncturing your skin with tiny needles, which can exacerbate these symptoms and potentially lead to further complications.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you should wait until your sunburn has completely healed or your suntan has faded before considering microneedling. In fact, most doctors recommend avoiding the sun two weeks before treatment and two weeks after.
In addition to avoiding the sun, you should also avoid any harsh scrubs, exfoliants, or retinol products. You want your skin to be in a calm state.
After your microneedling treatment
After microneedling, your skin may be pink and irritated, much like a sunburn. You should avoid the sun after your treatment, and in general, especially since sun exposure can deplete collagen. Microneedling boosts collagen production. It’s important to stay hydrated and keep your skin moisturized to promote healing.
Although you’ll need several sessions to get the maximum benefits of microneedling, many people experience glowing, plump skin immediately after their treatment.
If you’re ready for younger, smoother, more vibrant skin, or if you’d like to learn more about microneedling, make an appointment with Dr. von Plitt for a free consultation. At your consultation, Dr. von Plitt determines if you’re a good candidate for this noninvasive procedure, answers all your questions, and discusses pre- and post-treatment instructions.
